Embryo – three or four toothpicks are
pierced into the seed near the pointy end. With
the flat end down the avo seed must be half
immersed in water until it is ready to be transplanted
into soil. It may be necessary to occasionally
replace the water. Once roots appear you could
be surprised at how clean the water stays. It
seems that avo roots are able to absorb many
pollutants! The avo seed could be suspended
in water and nurtured sometimes for months before
a root appears.
Youngster – once the avocado seed produces
a stem and leaves its graduation ceremony consists
of lovingly and gently planting it in a pot
of potting soil. Suitable homes are sourced
by Strat Distributors for the “Youngster”
and the new families will be involved in the
next phase of their growth…
Yuppie – this is the nickname we give
to our Youngsters when they finally graduate
into the “real world” – your
garden. But also remember that some youngsters
will also be happy to grow in a pot as long
as it is regularly watered and pruned and its
soil occasionally enriched with compost and
other nutrients.
Depending
on a host of factors and hindrances it could take
up to 2 years (or even longer) for our little
avocado trees to finally graduate to being “Yuppies”
but it’s always worth it to see them finally
in the open – adopted, loved and forming
part of a new family.
